Admission into Consortium Highlights NETGEAR's Commitment to
Providing Affordable and Ubiquitous Network Connectivity to All
Santa Clara, CA -- NETGEARŪ, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTGR - News), a
worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking
products, today announced its membership in the WiMAX Forum(TM), an
industry-led, non-profit corporation formed to advance the IEEE 802.16,
or WiMAX, broadband wireless networking standard. NETGEAR's admission as
a principal member into the group is among the first for vendors that
provide networking solutions for homes and small- and medium-sized
businesses. NETGEAR's inclusion supports its strategy of maintaining
close alliances with partners and consortiums on the cutting edge of
networking technology. |

"As with MIMO and OFDM, WiMAX is another example of how NETGEAR
positions itself ahead of the technology curve in developing solutions
for emerging wireless standards," said Patrick Lo, NETGEAR's chairman
and chief executive officer. "WiMAX is a potentially significant
technology that could revolutionize the way people get broadband access.
NETGEAR's commitment to providing innovative and affordable devices for
the home and business will be instrumental in driving a faster adoption
of this new and open standard."
WiMAX is a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last-mile
wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL. WiMAX will
provide fixed, nomadic, portable and, eventually, mobile wireless
broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a
base station.
Formed in June 2001, the WiMAX Forum is a nonprofit association that
promotes the adoption of IEEE 802.16-compliant equipment by operators of
broadband wireless access systems. With the proliferation of several
proprietary wireless standards creating great confusion and
inconvenience for consumers and businesses, members of the WiMAX Forum
will work together to promote and certify the compatibility and
interoperability of solutions for the new standards-based networking
technology platform. Expecting mass adoption, support for WiMAX will be
integrated into laptops and mobile devices, providing portable and
nomadic communication in city- and enterprise- wide deployments.
"We welcome NETGEAR to the WiMAX Forum," said Ron Resnick, president of
the WiMAX Forum. "It's important that we include equipment vendors such
as NETGEAR that have a close affiliation with home and small business
networking users. By applying to join the organization, NETGEAR has
reinforced its commitment to industry standards for product
compatibility."
By joining the WiMAX Forum, NETGEAR will design and manufacture
innovative solutions tailored for portable and mobile use in a WiMAX
environment, including routers, gateways, cards, and other access
devices, enabling users to receive data at speeds comparable to fixed
T-1 lines and at distances of several miles.
