WiMAX Access Networks

Fujitsu Offers New Options for Access Networks with Significant Upgrade to its FLASHWAVE® 7420 Platform

Fujitsu Network Communications Inc.
March 21, 2006

New Features include Support for Hybrid C/DWDM Configurations, 80 Wavelengths, SFP/XFP Optics, and Gigabit Ethernet Multiplexing

LAS VEGAS -- Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, announced today a significant new release of its FLASHWAVE® 7420 wavelength access platform. This feature-rich Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system has a new optical layer design and a hybrid implementation of both static and dynamic photonic components that will allow carriers to lower the cost of deployment of broadband optical services over a shared, survivable access infrastructure. The new FLASHWAVE 7420 platform will be on display this week in the Fujitsu booth (No. 1337) during the TelecomNEXT conference and exhibition in Las Vegas.

The FLASHWAVE 7420 wavelength access platform is fully incorporated into the Fujitsu WDM portfolio through a successful four-year OEM relationship with ADVA Optical Networking Inc. The flexible system will multiplex and offer transport for high-speed voice, video, data and storage applications. The carrier-class platform, available in both a standard (seven rack unit) and slimline (one rack unit) chassis version, can be used to dramatically increase bandwidth and service flexibility, while supporting new revenue-generating opportunities for high-speed Ethernet and Storage Area Network (SAN) services. Individual wavelengths can be provisioned with or without protection to offer Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation at highly competitive prices.

“The FLASHWAVE 7420 wavelength access platform continues to be a critical component of our overall WDM portfolio because it helps our carrier customers lower the cost of transporting Ethernet and certified storage services,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. “With the enhanced capabilities of the new FLASHWAVE 7420 platform, Fujitsu continues our corporate goal of helping carriers evolve their networks, lower operating expenses and offer innovative new services.”

Major new features on the FLASHWAVE 7420 wavelength access platform include:
  • Simultaneous Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) capabilities on a single FLASHWAVE 7420 chassis, as well as seamless migration of services between both technologies
  • A full suite of Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) and 10 Gbps Small Form-factor Pluggable (XFP) optics that offer integrated amplification, signal conditioning, embedded communications, and optical protection, in addition to carrier-class transport for multiple services up to 10 Gbps
  • Transmission of 80 protected wavelengths (increasing from 32 protected wavelengths in prior releases) to allow up to 640 separate services to be transported over a single pair of fibers
  • Support for transmission distances of up to 200 km across a single span and new Raman amplification modules that support network distances beyond 1000 km without regeneration

New management and provisioning functionality includes support for a Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) control plane, Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Optical Transport Network (OTN) aggregation, and G.709 digital wrapper technology. When combined with existing support for an Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC) and an Embedded Communications Channel (ECC), the FLASHWAVE 7420 platform offers unmatched operation and service provisioning capabilities from any node on the network.

The same NETSMART® 1500 Element Management System that manages existing Fujitsu SONET and WDM network elements can also be used to manage the FLASHWAVE 7420 platform and provision services on demand. This seamless integration with legacy networks leverages existing infrastructure investments, enabling a true end-to-end network solution. In addition, a comprehensive network modeling tool is available to simplify traffic planning, engineering and product ordering responsibilities. Complex networks can be configured quickly, and “what if” scenarios explored, without the typical need for laborious manual analysis.
