Wavesat
and Atmel to develop compatible WiMAX chipset solution
Baseband and RF Chips Will Simplify WiMAX System Developments
Montreal, Canada – May 3, 2005 -
Wavesat Inc., a leading developer of WiMAX silicon, and Atmel
Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a worldwide leader in the development,
fabrication and sale of advanced semiconductors, announced they are
leveraging their current manufacturing relationship of the world’s
first WiMAX compliant PHY to develop compatible Baseband and RF chips
for the 802.16 market as early as Q4/ 2005.
This proactive teamwork agreement for a WiMAX chipset will feature
Wavesat’s EvolutiveTM DM256 WiMAX baseband ASIC and Atmel’s WiMAX
compliant radio. Atmel’s radio, under development now, will have
variants covering the 2.5/3.5 GHz licensed bands. These two chips are
designed to interface seamlessly with Wavesat’s PHY solution to
simplify WiMAX system designs by providing a fully compatible WiMAX
solution that includes the PHY layer as well as the radio transceiver.
“This Wavesat/Atmel WiMAX chipset solution is a clear advantage,” said
Jeff Leasure, Marketing Manager for Atmel’s WiMAX radio solutions.
“Our customers will benefit from a low risk, low-cost, fast time to
market and high performance solution based on years of baseband and
radio expertise. By creating a variant of our WiMAX compliant radio
architecture to specifically interface with the Wavesat baseband
solution, we can simplify system communication issues in a reference
design.”
“The decision to move forward with greater technical and marketing
collaboration with Atmel will provide additional tools, for both our
organizations, to better serve our customers and considerably lower
their systems costs,” said Michel Guay, President and CEO of Wavesat.
“Our customers will have access to a complete chipset solution as well
as Wavesat’s user-friendly development platform and support.” |
