Mobile WiMAX Interoperability

WiMAX Forum PlugFest Showcases Interoperability Among Mobile WiMAX Products

Other Topics: Fixed Broadband Solution, WiMAX Multimedia Streaming, DoD WiMAX

The WiMAX Forum™
September 26, 2006

Beaverton, OR -- WiMAX Forum™ has brought 21 members of the equipment development and operator communities together for the first public mobile WiMAX Forum PlugFest, an interoperability showcase hosted by Bechtel Telecommunications at its Training, Demonstration, and Research (TDR) Laboratory in Frederick, Maryland. The PlugFest kicked off on Sunday, September 24, 2006 and will conclude on Sunday, October 1.

Participating companies include: Accton Technologies, Adaptix, Airspan, Alcatel, Altair Semiconductor, Alvarion, Beceem Communications, CETECOM-Aeroflex, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, M/A-Com, Motorola, Navini Networks, picoChip, POSDATA, Runcom, Samsung, SEQUANS Communications, SOMA Networks, TTA Labs, Wintegra, and test equipment vendors: CETECOM, Invenova, and Rohde and Schwarz.

Based on a record number of mobile equipment manufacturers requesting to participate in this PlugFest, WiMAX Forum is also announcing that an additional PlugFest will be held at the CETECOM testing facility in Malaga, Spain on October 20-24, 2006. The PlugFest at CETECOM will focus on incremental service interoperability tests for WiMAX products designed for fixed and stationary applications.

“Together, WiMAX Forum member companies from around the world will meet the market demand for WiMAX products that have earned the WiMAX Forum Certified™ seal – an achievement that denotes interoperability,” said Ron Resnick, President of the WiMAX Forum. “The PlugFests held over the next two months signify continued momentum in mobile WiMAX product development and progress toward the widespread proliferation of these systems in networks around the world.”

The WiMAX Forum PlugFest provides mobile WiMAX equipment suppliers an open environment in which to test compatibility and interoperability of equipment in preparation for certification. Interoperability is the foundation of standardization and the core tenet of the WiMAX Forum’s efforts.

The next step for companies participating in the PlugFest is to achieve the WiMAX Forum Certified™ seal. The WiMAX Forum Certification Test Lab located at CETECOM in Malaga, Spain, and which has been certifying WiMAX Forum fixed products since January 2006, will soon be joined by TTA Labs of Korea for the initial certification of mobile WiMAX products. Mobile certification testing is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2006, with market availability of WiMAX Forum Certified™ mobile WiMAX products beginning in early 2007. Representatives from both labs are heavily involved in the current mobile PlugFest.

The WiMAX Forum continues strengthening the WiMAX ecosystem with a current membership approaching 400 companies acting in concert to develop, produce, certify, and deliver quality products. Each member company shares the WiMAX Forum’s commitment to the open interoperability of products delivering broadband wireless services.
